For a number of years I’ve been interested in writing the Sports RPG. The idea never quite came together — I always got stuck on the “what do they do?” part of the game. However, I may have found the next best thing: Goal Line Blitz. It advertises itself as the first MMO Sports RPG. Like most online fantasy sports games you get a team and try to win games. The catch is that all the players are human controlled. So as an owner you have to negotiate contracts, work with players to devise a gameplan, etc. The individual players create any position (the glamor positions like QB take more points to create), train up their guys through levels, spend points on special abilities, just like any traditional RPG.
At the end of the day, instead of slaying monsters, you try to score touchdowns.
It’s amazingly addicting and you can play for free. The business model allows you to buy up points to improve your players or purchase a team. That’s when the real fun begins.
Until I get off my ass and write said Sports RPG, Goal Line Blitz might be the next best thing for me.

Computers at the gaming table are nothing new but a technology that I have been keeping an eye on for several years is digital ink. The difference? Digital ink, as you might expect, is a low-power display technology used to simulate ink on a paper. Meaning, it keeps its display state after the electrical charge is removed. Re-apply a charge and you “wipe” the paper and can “reprint” to it. This paper is also flexible, like a real sheet of paper.
It’s a long ways from the here-and-now, but until then Sony has released their second generation ebook reader. A self-contained unit that can read ebooks as well as PDFs. Still short on the functionality needed at the gaming table, but a step in the right direction.

The little guy sure is tempermental but loves his gaming! Now that I know he has a personality its going to make it that much harder when the RRoD finally takes him frome me…

Play it or not, Madden Football has become a multi-billion dollar industry. Each year the franchise — out on nine different systems! — sets new sales records. To call it a cash cow is something of an understatement. It’s like having a yearly Halo event for every system!
Anyway, it’s out today. Are you ready for some football?

Great news today as the first three downloadable song packs for Guitar Hero 2 for the 360 were released today. They’re all covers. They cost 500 points, or $6.25. That’s $2.08 a song. They are all from the original Guitar Hero game released on the PS2 years ago.
At this rate, buying just the old songs from the original Guitar Hero will set back 360 owners $98.09.
Activision, go fuck yourself.

Hey, remember the Battlestar Galactica CCG I posted about last year? Yea, not many people do, apparently. Having dropped north of $200 on the CCG (my first) and only playing it a handful of times, it seems that was more than most. Late to the party (again), WizKids killed the game officially in mid-March.
Now if we can just have the show reach the same fate…
